PLT Box Kite History

Published: 27 Nov 2023

The first PLT Box Kite (1976 I think) was made with brown parka nylon and wooden sticks, 2.4m span x 2m long.  It was given as first prize in a local kite competition, won by a young Phillip McConnachie who later become a world class kite designer, valued employee, and close friend.  This kite will be in our pending kite museum.

In 1978 I made the first 6m PLT Box (also called Tri D and Pelly box by some) for the inaugural American Kitefliers Association Convention in Ocean City Maryland.  With 60 degree cells, larger in the front.  It won second prize in the strongest pulling kite category, and was sold to Ron Moss, another attendee, who never paid for it (anyone have an address?)   Quite soon after this we developed the standard fibreglass tube (later carbon) Koru pattern 6m box kites which were the first maxi kites that we made in any volume.  Before the development of reliable parafoil lifters these were in strong demand for lifting large spinsocks from Catch the Wind, our Centipedes and etc.

There is a very special one in Te Papa (NZ's national museum), made by son Pete Lynn. It has more than 1200panels.  He made two of these, the other, owned by the Al Farsi Kite team, has been loaned for our pending kite museum.
